Learning English With Songs
An easy and fun way to learn more English
Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? When we hear something with music it can be easier to remember. This is lucky because if you listen to music with English lyrics it can help you learn and be fun too.
What English language skills can you learn with songs?
Listening
It is obvious but when we listen to the lyrics in a song we practice our English listening skills.
The first time you listen ask yourself: what does this song mean? How is the person singing? Happy? Sad? Angry? Excited?
Reading
The second time you listen to the song, read the lyrics at the same time. You can find lyrics by searching for a song ‘with lyrics’ on Youtube. Were you right about what the song means?
Vocabulary
Are there any new words or phrases in the song? Songs can be about almost anything and are full of lots of useful new language. If you do not know a word, look it up and listen to what it means in the song.
If you want to learn more new vocab on your own, check out this simple method:
Grammar
What tense is the song in? It could be a love story from the past, it could be a description of a stressful time in the singer’s life at the moment or it could be a desire to do something in the future. Songs use all different kinds of tenses and forms. Look at the verbs and see how many you can spot.
Speaking (or singing!)
One thing you could try is speaking or singing along with the song. Listen to how the singer pronounces the words. What intonation do they use to add emotion? If you are feeling very confident, search for an ‘instrumental’ version of the song on Youtube and do some Karaoke!
Writing
If you are feeling creative then you could try and write your own song or poem. It can be about anything: an interesting story you would like to tell, an expression of love for somebody you care about or a way of describing your feelings.
