Can anyone learn English? 

The simple answer to this question is ‘yes’. Here are some reasons why you can and how to find the best way to learn English that will suit you. 

Learning English and your age

Reason 1: You can learn regardless of your age

Many older English learners question whether they can learn a new language.  You can learn something new regardless of your age, level of education or native language, I’d like to believe. 

Learning English and your past learning experience 

Reason 2: You can learn English even if you had a bad experience at school as a child

It can begin by looking at your own attitude towards learning and what you would like to learn. Of course, past experiences with learning can have a profound effect on learning in later life so if you have the luxury of studying at your own pace then do a learning audit and adjust it to your needs. Many adult English learners don’t start English courses because of negative schooling experiences in their childhood. However, I often see many of them surprise themselves with how well they actually do once they start. A modern language school is most likely very different to what you experienced in formal education as a child! 

Also, ask yourself what you’ll bring of yourself to your adult learning experiences, what are your strengths weaknesses and perceptions towards learning? If there are any hidden issues concerning it always remember you’re learning for yourself and learning independently.

Becoming an independent English speaker 

Reason 3: You can become an independent English speaker

When you come out of your language course, how do you see yourself? There is nothing worse than exiting a course and being psychologically education

dependent. Here I refer to someone who is unable to continue outside of the school independently and relies on the teacher or school environment as the only environment to practise English. Ultimately some people repeatedly return to school as though they had never learnt anything. Once you know that learning is meant to empower you and that all the learning and effort put into you has been worthwhile, then go for it! And you are eventually meant to leave. Your entering and then leaving the course should be a

celebration of the work both you and the school have done. 

Your learning style

Next, you need to discover what kind of learner you are. Your previous lack of learning success may be due to the teaching style not being suited to your learning style. Your learning style is very useful information to make your learning more effective. Also, bear in mind that your style may have evolved considerably from when you were a child. But remember the learning experiences you

have are for yourself to give you a better chance at acquiring the language.

Reason 5: You can learn if you have good enough motivation

Another reason is the position of importance foreign languages are given in our society. Most young people in the future and even today speak one or more foreign languages. Reasons will vary from it simply being a

hobby, an additional subject you need to learn for work or school or purely for social reasons languages. The importance placed on foreign languages today allows people to no longer feel isolated and with it being a lucrative industry people are less inclined to be suspicious of why a person wants to learn or teach a particular language.

Finding a school or learning platform that suits you 

Reason 6: You can find the right way to learn 

Another reason why a person can learn English is because there are many ways in which you can obtain this knowledge either formally or informally. Formal ways of learning English are much broader now with there being online courses to there being official language schools that specialise in a particular language. Informal modes of learning English can be through friends, colleagues, unofficial websites and other media. Both formal and informal modes of education can be used to supplement each other. However, it is advisable to choose informal sources that appear to be dedicated to excelling at delivering good quality, preferably with a language education professional rather than one started as a hobby by the creator. There are plenty of sites out there started by organisations and language professionals that can supplement learning.

In addition to this friends and family are also great ways to learn.

Long after you’ve left your course and closed your books a dedicated family and group of friends can help anyone to continue to learn consciously and unconsciously and if you have been fortunate enough to have been given a gift of these individuals whilst in school or college to take with you when you leave count your blessings, half the work has been done for you and it really wouldn’t make any sense reinventing the wheel by ignoring this fact and acquiring different ones. It’s common sense. Simply relax and enjoy each other.
